The Best Drip Coffee Machines

Drip coffee makers are robust machines capable of making coffee hands-free. They can be big and bulky taking up valuable counter space or cabinet space.

The top drip machines are simple in design and are simple to use. Some drip machines include extra features such as programmable clocks and self-cleaning modes to make your morning coffee more personalised.

1. De'Longhi TrueBrew

The De'Longhi TrueBrew can be used to make coffee in one step - from whole beans to a cup of coffee in only a few presses. It comes with a built-in burr grinder (taken directly from the espresso machines of De'Longhi) that measures the proper amount of coffee grounds and compacts them prior to brewing – eliminating wasteful plastic filters and pods.

It also has a variety of settings that can be adapted to the size and style, from 3oz espresso drinks, up to 16oz of iced tea and 40oz for the standard carafe. It can pour coffee into any vessel you like whether it's a large cup or a tiny espresso cup. It even makes tea!

Manufacturers love to invent absurd technical jargons, and this one has the Bean Extract Technology which "adapts and precisely grinds" the beans according to the beans you choose. That's all marketing. It's essential that it's easy to use, quick and doesn't cause many mess while brewing. It's not able to make a short shot or a lengthy shot of espresso, and it does not have a steam wand. If you're looking for those features, I suggest taking a look at the Moccamaster KBG Select instead.

2. Cuisinart MultiServe

This is one the best drip coffee makers available on the market. It produces consistently flavorful, hot cups of coffee that brew efficiently.

We also loved the ease with the ability to modify the brewing experience. You can select your cup size (from 5-ounce single servings to a full carafe) and the strength you prefer by simply turning dials and also choose between a regular or french press setting. You can make cold brew with the press of a button or select from a variety of specialty options such as Over Ice and Roasted.

The only downside is that the design isn't as elegant as some of the more sophisticated models we've tried. For example, the rounded Smeg drip machine looks like an Easter egg and is a welcome break from the traditional boxy designs of competitors. Its narrow opening and slim tank can be difficult to navigate, particularly in the dark when the brew is running. It requires a bit more thought and effort than some customers would like to see as part of their daily routine.

3. Keurig K-Cup brewer

Keurig single-serve coffee makers utilize prepackaged K-cups, which eliminate the need to measure and grind grounds, and also control the brewing time. These machines can also make the cup of coffee in under two minutes, which is considerably faster than a standard drip machine.

The Keurigs that we tested produced quite a mess than drip machines. The spout that spews hot coffee creates a two-inch splash zone that releases droplets on the drip tray, machine, and counter. They also create a loud, irritating sputtering noise while making coffee.

Despite the mess, the Keurigs we've tested are very efficient. The K-Cafe with Smart Keurig is the most sophisticated model, and comes with a removable reservoir, four K-cup sizes with three temperature settings and a menu that can be customized. It has an impressive 78-ounce water tank that can brew several cups before it has to be filled. And it can also brew a cup using the coffee you grind yourself, which is a rare feature in the form of a Keurig. The controls are simple and easy to use however, the machine communicates via tones and chirps, not a display, which makes it difficult to know when a cup is ready.

Like its older sibling the Ratio Eight, the Six offers a premium experience with a lower price and a smaller footprint. The single-button system emulates a pour over, with a precision metered flow of water, and the ideal temperature for coffee. The machine utilizes a powerful 1400 watts to heat water and complete the full process in five to six minutes, which is significantly less than many of the lesser models we have tested. The speedy brewing time is in part due to the bloom cycle which allows grounds of coffee to settle before the shower head is able to deliver the remainder of the hot water for the best extraction.

The Six features a shield of heat that is unique to keep the water at a perfect temperature and protect the spray head. This is one of a few brewers that has been Golden Cup certified by Specialty Coffee Association. This means it maintains the right brewing temperature throughout the entire process of brewing.

The Six is sleek, minimal and minimalist in its design. It comes with a stainless steel carafe, which sits on top of a Melitta flat-bottom filter holder. The carafe is insulated, which keeps the brewed coffee warm without the necessity of heating plates that helps preserve the flavor.
